How Different Types of DDoS Protection Work

What an attack looks like?

An attacker creates a large amount of traffic in order to exhaust the bandwidth of the Internet channel and disrupt the operation of the network infrastructure.

How does DDoS protection work?

In our DDoS-protected hosting, all traffic to secure IP aesses goes through a security system that performs scrubbing: it rejects illegitimate traffic, letting only cleared incoming traffic through. Smart filtering is performed without redirects, IP blocks, or captchas. Traffic is redirected to secure IP addresses. All settings, including changing the A record in DNS, are performed by the provider.

L3/L4 protection
What an attack looks like?

Attackers disguise their actions as legitimate traffic by manipulating requests and interactions with web applications, which causes system crashes or overloads.

How does DDoS protection work?

On top of a public IP, the website is assigned a private IP address, specified in the domain’s A record. All HTTP/HTTPS traffic is directed to this address and goes through security systems that analyze requests, detect anomalies, and block malicious actions without using captcha or redirects (WAF protection). The scrubbed traffic is then redirected to your server’s IP address.

FAQ

What is a DDoS attack?

A DDoS attack is a distributed denial-of-service attack in which a significant number of requests are sent to the target service in order to degrade its performance or render it completely disabled.

How can I protect my server from DDoS attacks?

To protect your server from DDoS attacks, you need to:

1. Configure firewall and traffic filtering at L3/L4 to block simple network attacks.

2. Use specialized solutions to protect against L7 attacks, including anomaly detection systems, limiting the number of requests, and using CDNs for load distribution.

We also recommend to:

— regularly update the software;
— restrict open ports;
— set up traffic monitoring;
— secure backup capacity for peak loads.

How do I choose a DDoS protection service?

The choice of protection against DDoS attacks should be based on the network layer under attack: the network and transport layers (L3, L4) or the application layer (L7).

Servercore provides DDoS-protected web hosting services. Key features such as basic protection against DDoS attacks at L3 and L4 and cloud data protection are included in the price of your dedicated servers and products. To ensure comprehensive protection at L7, we recommend enabling the anti-DDoS software solution by Qrator in our control panel.

What threats does basic DDoS protection (L3, L4) by Servercore handle?

Basic protection provides protection against various types of attacks, including:

— UDP-based reflection attacks (for example, DNS, NTP, memcache, and others);
— attacks using fragmented IP traffic;
— TCP SYN/RST/PSH flood;
— various types of UDP flood;
— various types of ICMP flood.

Protection is provided at the L3 and L4 network protocol layers. This means that Servercore solutions analyze incoming traffic and block unwanted data flows from the external network.

How much legitimate traffic is processed by the Qrator protection system?

Qrator protection includes 10 Mbps of legitimate traffic. If this limit is exceeded, the overspend fee will be calculated separately at the end of the month.

Detailed traffic information is available in your Qrator Merchant profile. To access your personal account, use the username and password that Qrator will send to the email address you specified when enabling the protection service.

How do I pay for Qrator protection?

The Qrator DDoS protection service is paid for a full calendar month, regardless of the activation date. The activation date will be agreed with you in advance.

For example, if you decide to activate the service from March 15, you will pay for the full month, and the service will be valid until April 1.

On the first day of each month, we charge the subscription fee from the client’s account for the next month. Within five business days at the beginning of the month, we issue an invoice for overspending legitimate traffic from the previous month.
